That day, Wednesday the 10th of November, was more frightening than the night before. The news of vom Rathâs death had come too late for any mayhem to be fully organised on that first evening. Many SA men were fast asleep or passed out drunk from the Beer Hall Putsch celebrations. But just after noon, Berlin became embroiled.
Since Hitler had been appointed Chancellor, Jews became accustomed to small and large indignities, from being short-changed in shops, to curses on the street, to being made to walk in the gutter if an SA-man passed. But this day was the beginning of something new, something unexpected. Nothing had prepared the Jews for the calamity which now engulfed them. Many Jewish homes were ransacked, belongings thrown from windows. Only those synagogues which abutted Aryan buildings were not set alight. The rest were smashed and burned, their stained glass carefully shattered, their treasures, the Torahs, candlesticks and goblets, dumped on the pavement and casually looted, against the strongest prohibition by Goebbels. Max, David and Henri saw and heard little of these events. They didnât see the bloody faces, the shattered spectacles, the pleading women and screaming children, as husbands and fathers were dragged from their homes and beaten while passers-by averted their gaze and policemen stared. They didnât see old men being taunted for wetting their pants in fear, their beards tugged and their stomachs punched until they vomited, then cursed and beaten again for dirtying the street. They didnât hear the smash of mirrors thrown from apartments, the ashen Jewish moans, the whistles and shouts, all combining into a fairground of violence, as men were shoved aboard lorries and carried away like sardines, to a place of still greater despair. Werner, Henri and Max experienced none of this. They were safe in Maxâs hotel room.
Max placed another pair of empty trays in front of his door, careful first to look through the fisheye peephole. The corridor was empty. Newly polished shoes waited patiently in front of bedroom doors. He picked up a complimentary newspaper and glanced at the headlines.
